Weaknesses Of A Population Of Trained And Untrained...
This study had weaknesses that decreased the significance of the results. The study was very limited in the subjects involved; there were 15 male track and field athletes with a record 400 time less than 53 seconds from Flemish athletics clubs, and performing in Belgium. These subjects were all 18 to 28 year old trained males from one country. The results cannot be generalized to a population of trained and untrained individuals. The dose of à ²-alanine administered may have not been sufficient to induce an improvement in performance (2007). Also, the amount of à ²-alanine given is relatively small since the sprint-trained subjects already have a great initial carnosine concentration; the amount of à ²-alanine supplemented cannot be generalized to untrained subjects (2007). Since the washout phase is unknown and muscle carnosine loading takes weeks of supplementing with à ²-alanine to induce an affect, a paired cross over design was unable to be conducted to see the differences i n treatments (2007). Since the groups only had between seven and eight subjects, there was not enough statistical power created (2007). These confounding variables affect the conditions and results of the study. The outcomes of the study were inconclusive. The weaknesses in this study outweigh the strengths. Even though the study was double-blinded and placebo-based, the study was not randomized and only included a small population of Flemish track trained male athletes between the age of 18 to 28 years.
